IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In the future, more people may choose to spend their holidays in their own country instead of travelling abroad. I agree with this statement because domestic holidays are usually cheaper, more convenient, and can help people discover places in their own country.

First of all, travelling within the same country is often less expensive than travelling abroad. People can save money on international flights, visas, and foreign accommodation. This is especially important for families who have to manage a limited budget. For example, a family living in Canada can travel to places such as Banff or Vancouver instead of spending a large amount of money on an international trip.

Another reason is that domestic travel is more convenient. People do not have to deal with visa applications, different currencies, language barriers, or long international flights. They can also travel by car or train, which can make the journey easier and more flexible. For instance, people living in Alberta can take a short road trip to the Rocky Mountains and enjoy nature without making complicated travel arrangements.

Finally, travelling within one’s own country allows people to learn more about their local culture, history, and natural attractions. Many people do not explore the beautiful places that are close to their homes because they are more interested in travelling abroad. In my experience, visiting different places in Canada can be a great way to experience new landscapes and activities without leaving the country.

In conclusion, I agree that more people will choose domestic holidays in the future. Lower costs, greater convenience, and the opportunity to explore their own country are likely to make domestic travel increasingly popular.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. Each paragraph introduces a distinct, relevant reason—cost, convenience, and cultural discovery—which are well-supported with logical explanations and concrete examples, such as the mention of Banff and the Rocky Mountains. The ideas are well-developed, and the conclusion effectively summarises your stance. To reach a higher band, you could aim to provide more nuanced counter-arguments or deeper analysis of the long-term implications of this trend, but the current response is comprehensive and well-focused.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'First of all', 'Another reason', and 'Finally'. Referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow. The use of cohesive devices is consistent and does not feel forced, contributing to a coherent and well-structured piece of writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'manage a limited budget', 'complicated travel arrangements', and 'natural attractions' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and conveys your meaning clearly, it is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to add variety and flair. For instance, instead of 'less expensive', you could use 'cost-effective' or 'economical'. Overall, the lexical control is good, and there are no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like structures ('if... because...') and relative clauses ('who have to manage...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is consistent. There are no significant grammatical errors that distract the reader. To move toward a higher band, you could experiment with a wider range of complex sentence patterns, such as inversion or more varied subordinate clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility in your grammatical control.
