IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the upcoming time, a myriad of people will choose to travel within their home country to enjoy their holidays, rather than travel to a foreign nation. In regard to the given statement, I partially agree with this scenario. I will elaborate briefly in the upcoming essay with relevant examples and a conclusion.
To commence with, in the future, people will choose to travel in their own country because travel will become much more expensive compared to current expenses, and I also think the flight tickets will be
more expensive in the future. Likewise, hotel rates will also be at a peak in the upcoming years. Due to political threats such as wars, curfews, plane hijackings, and health diseases (COVID-19), the public will prefer to travel in their own country.
For example, many individuals who already booked their holiday tickets for Dubai for 2027, due to current wars between Arab countries, the majority of people has cancel their tickets and choose to travel within their surrounding area.
On the contrary, many countries are promoting and influencing travellers to travel abroad by promoting their culture, food, and well-known spots to visit. Many individuals will be travelling to diverse countries to explore and experience their unique culture for their personal growth. In addition, in the future, travelling might become easy and transparent because many country will remove their restrictions on visa permits, and they will allow free entry for travellers. For example, countries such as Singapore, whose visitor visa is very difficult to get, will promote tourism in the future and give free entry to travellers.
In summary, I think people will like to travel within their own country because it will be safe; however, I also think free entry to some countries will encourage many people to explore their diverse cultures to experience and achieve personal growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student addresses the prompt by agreeing partially with the statement about holiday preferences. They provide reasons for both sides of the argument, mentioning the rising costs of travel and safety concerns as factors encouraging domestic travel, while also acknowledging the allure of international travel for cultural experiences. However, the response lacks depth in the exploration of ideas and examples, which limits the effectiveness of the argument. The conclusion, although it summarizes the main points, could be more definitive regarding the student's stance. Overall, this response fulfills the task to a moderate extent, warranting a band score of 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a logical progression of ideas but struggles with coherence in some areas. For instance, the transition between the costs of travel and the appeal of promoting international tourism could be more fluid. While the main points are discernible, the linking phrases are basic and could be enhanced to create more sophisticated connections between ideas. The conclusion ties the argument together but could better reflect the main points discussed. Despite these weaknesses, the overall structure is clear, leading to a coherence and cohesion band score of 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The lexical resource used in this response shows a reasonable range of vocabulary but also includes some imprecise word choices. Words like "myriad" and "peaking" indicate an attempt to use more advanced vocabulary. However, phrases such as "the public will prefer to travel in their own country" could be replaced with a more varied expression. Additionally, occasional awkward phrasing, such as "the majority of people has cancel their tickets," affects clarity. Overall, this response demonstrates competence in lexical resource but does not fully exploit a broader range, meriting a band score of 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The grammatical range and accuracy display a mix of strengths and weaknesses. The writer attempts complex sentence structures, such as, "Due to political threats such as wars, curfews, plane hijackings, and health diseases (COVID-19), the public will prefer to travel in their own country." However, errors in subject-verb agreement and verb tense (e.g. "the majority of people has cancel their tickets") detract from the overall accuracy. Despite these mistakes, the meaning is generally clear. Therefore, this area can be rated at a band score of 6.5.
Overall feedback
The essay presents a balanced view on future travel preferences, effectively addressing both domestic and international tourism. You demonstrated a foundational understanding of the topic, which is commendable. However, to strengthen your argument, consider developing your points with more specific examples and deeper analysis. Additionally, enhancing your cohesion through varied linking phrases will aid clarity. Improving grammatical accuracy will elevate the clarity of your ideas. Focus on practicing complex structures and proofreading your work for minor errors. This will help achieve higher scores in all evaluation criteria in future essays.
