IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In the future, more people may choose to spend their holidays in their own country rather than travelling abroad. I largely agree with this view because domestic holidays are often cheaper, more convenient, and can help support the local economy.

One major reason why people may prefer domestic travel is the lower cost. Travelling abroad usually involves expensive flights, visas, accommodation, and other additional expenses. In contrast, people can often travel to attractive places within their own country by car, bus, or train at a much lower cost. For example, a family may choose to visit a famous mountain area or a coastal city in their own country instead of spending a large amount of money on an international trip.

Another important factor is convenience. International travel can involve long flights, complicated visa procedures, language barriers, and unfamiliar customs. Domestic tourists do not usually face these difficulties because they already understand the language, culture, and local transportation system. Furthermore, travelling within one’s own country allows people to discover places and traditions that they may have previously overlooked.

Domestic tourism can also benefit local communities. When people stay in their own country for holidays, they spend money on local hotels, restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions. This creates employment opportunities and contributes to the national economy.

In conclusion, I agree that more people are likely to choose domestic holidays in the future. Lower costs, greater convenience, and the opportunity to support local businesses are strong reasons for this trend. However, international travel will probably remain popular among people who want to experience different cultures and countries.

The response is well-balanced and demonstrates a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the supporting points follow a logical flow. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The referencing is clear, and the relationship between sentences is well-managed, making the text easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the topic. Phrases such as 'domestic holidays', 'international travel', 'visa procedures', and 'national economy' show a solid grasp of topic-specific language. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, it is generally standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations and idiomatic expressions. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision, and there are no significant errors in word choice or spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'When people stay in their own country for holidays, they spend money on local hotels...' which demonstrates an ability to handle subordinate clauses. The punctuation is accurate, and there are very few grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips do not impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the piece.
