Student answer (Band 7.0)

A growing number of people will choose domestic destinations for their vacations instead of travelling a foreign country. I agree to the standpoint because travelling to a regional area is affordable and convenient. Moreover, it saves them from issues such as language barrier and limited food choices.

To commence with, the main reason why increasing number of individuals will prefer local destinations is that it is a convenient and cost-friendly option. To elaborate, since a visa required for travelling overseas, it can be a time-consuming process for some people as they have to gather multiple documents which can be a cumbersome process. Furthermore, travellers also face visa charges which are significantly high for American and European countries. To exemplify, those who apply for American visas have to give a bundle of documents to the embassy for clearance due to increased scrutiny by the immigration officers.

In addition to this, more people will choose regional destinations so that they do not have to face communication barriers. To expound, since every country has their own national language, some people may face difficulties while for asking for directions or help in a foreign country. Additionally, tourists may find it difficult to adjust to the available food options. They might become weak due to a restricted diet and this can create a formidable situation. For instance, people travelling to Japan face language barriers as the local people prefer to communicate in Japanese. Many people in India are vegetarian and they might find it difficult to eat meat as most of the Japanese food are non-vegetarian.

To recapitulate, this essay has discussed that convenience and affordability are the reasons why people will choose to spend vacation in their own countries. Moreover, they can also communicate effectively with local for help and will have ample of food choices to enjoy a pleasurable holiday.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas regarding convenience, cost, and language barriers are relevant and logically developed. Each paragraph provides a clear main idea supported by explanations and examples, such as the mention of visa processes and the specific challenges faced by tourists in Japan. The response is well-focused on the topic of domestic versus international travel, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. The development is sufficient to meet the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'To commence with', 'In addition to this', and 'To recapitulate'. While some cohesive devices are standard, they are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the variety of linking words could elevate the flow further. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You demonstrate the ability to use topic-specific terminology such as 'domestic destinations', 'visa charges', 'immigration officers', and 'communication barriers'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'travelling a foreign country' (should be 'to a foreign country') and 'give a bundle of documents' (a bit informal). However, these do not impede communication. You attempt to use some less common collocations, which is positive. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring collocations are natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'since a visa required for travelling overseas, it can be a time-consuming process'. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'since a visa required' (missing 'is'), 'every country has their own' (should be 'its own'), and 'most of the Japanese food are' (should be 'is'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding of your arguments.
