In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the future, most people will choose to spend their holiday in their own country rather than travel abroad. I agree with this view. I will elaborate on the reasons behind this with my opinion.

There are some notable reasons why people will choose to spend their holiday in their country rather than in foreign countries. The main reason is pollution. People are more aware of the environmental impact. If they travel by air, then they might contribute to increased pollution. Flights use jet fuel to fly. That emission is more harmful to the environment.

Furthermore, governments of each country are investing more in modernizing their Historic monuments, natural places, and so on. Thus, they can draw the attention of locals as well as foreigners. This kind of action will create a win-win situation for both the government and local people. Local people can spend their holiday pocket friendly. At the same time, the government can stop dragging its currency to another country.

On the contrary, some people will prefer to travel abroad to spend their holiday in the future. The reason behind this is materialistic. There is a hard truth that People want to show off their wealth by traveling abroad rather than enjoying their holiday by visiting places in their own country.

To recapitulate, I can assert that with a comprehensive approach by the government and civilians to development, people will prefer to enjoy their holiday in their own country rather than travelling to a foreign country. This will bring more benefits to the country of people in a positive way.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have clearly stated your position and addressed the prompt. The essay covers both the environmental and economic reasons for staying in one's own country, and you also acknowledge the counter-argument regarding the desire to show off wealth. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'pollution' is a bit repetitive, and the explanation of how governments 'stop dragging its currency' could be more clearly articulated to show a better understanding of economic impact. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully extended with more specific examples or logical consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Thus', and 'On the contrary' to signal transitions between ideas. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes a bit mechanical. For example, the transition between the environmental impact and the government's role in the second paragraph could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'this kind of action' which refers back to a broad concept. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, but more sophisticated linking would improve the cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modernizing', 'historic monuments', and 'comprehensive approach'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations. For example, 'spend their holiday pocket friendly' is not standard English; 'affordable' or 'budget-friendly' would be more appropriate. Similarly, 'stop dragging its currency' is an unnatural way to describe preventing capital flight or economic leakage. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, you need to use more precise, academic collocations to move into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'the government can stop dragging its currency to another country' contains a subject-verb agreement issue regarding the plural 'governments' mentioned earlier. There are also minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'People' being capitalized mid-sentence. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent article usage would be beneficial.
