IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

While it is widely believed that people will prefer their own nations for spending their vacations in future, I completely disagree with this statement because of attactive travel packages, curiosity of knowing other culture and limited holiday destinations in one country.

The most compelling reason for this is that the some countries would not let it happen as their economy is manily dependent on tourism. As the businesses in many countries such as Malasia, Singapore, Italy and many more, are highly dependent on tourists, they will advertise discounted travel packages to attract the travellers from various nations. As their home countries will have limited options of holiday destinations, visitors will be attracted by the beautiful locations in foreign nations, especially when they will save money on travelling abroad for unique experiences. Therefore, to reduce the monotony of daily life, people would visit new places rather than repeating the same destinations in their own country.

Moreover, people will continue travelling abroad due to educational purposes. Although spending vacations in foreign countries could be expensive, it is quite rewarding as well. For example, many professionals prefer international tourist destinations because they can gain knowledge about global trends, international markets, preferences of people from different cultures and many more. Consequenly, deciding holiday locations is not merely for enterntaiment for some travellers and these tourists will consistently be comparing all the nations before making decisions about their trips.

In conclusion, despite the fact that staying in home country for vacations is cost effective, people will not stop travelling abroad in their holidays because of entertainment factors, educational factors and economic factors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have provided relevant reasons, such as economic dependence on tourism and the educational value of travel, to support your disagreement with the statement. The ideas are extended with examples like Malaysia and Singapore, which helps to develop the argument. However, the development could be slightly more nuanced; for instance, the link between 'educational purposes' and 'holiday locations' is a bit tenuous. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces your central argument without needing to bridge logical gaps. Overall, the task is well-addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'The most compelling reason', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'and many more' which is used repeatedly and feels a bit informal. Improving the variety of cohesive links and ensuring that pronouns or references clearly point back to their antecedents would enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'monotony', 'compelling', and 'cost-effective'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'attactive', 'Malasia', 'Consequenly', and 'enterntaiment', which are distracting. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the occasional inaccuracies in word choice or spelling prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise collocations to express your ideas with greater sophistication and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You successfully employ complex sentences with 'Although' and 'While'. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the some countries', 'curiosity of knowing other culture' (should be 'other cultures'), and 'in future' (should be 'in the future'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on article usage (the/a/an) and subject-verb agreement. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band in this criterion.
