Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is an undeniable fact that travelling is at the top on many people's bucket lists. People choose the destination according their preference. It has been said that in the upcoming decades, there would be more numbers of people who would prefer vacation in their own country rather than international holidays. From my perspective, choosing the holiday destination includes many factors, such as location, weather, finances and many more; keeping all points in mind, travelling within the country would be more convenient. In the paragraphs below I would like to put forth my views with a valid opinion in the conclusion.

To begin with, everyone cannot afford to travel abroad. It could give the promising views and exciting locations, but could be expensive and exhausting at the same time due to longer journeys by plane. Furthermore, it includes various legal procedures as well, such as visa interviews, currency exchange, transit visa and customs. Additionally, it requires planning ahead of the time. Preparing itinerary at the last moment can make one feel on a cliffhanger. For instance, if a person is travelling to Paris from Canada, he would need to apply for Schengen visa at least a month advance to avoid the last minute hustle.

However, we seldom give a thought to ponder over the other side of the story. When one is travelling within own country, he is familiar with the location and language, which makes the holiday stress free. Later on, it gives one a peace of mind as he does not require to clear customs or other paper works. Moreover, it allows one to be in the same time zone while travelling, so he can manage some important work which needs the immediate attention. For example, if a citizen of Edmonton is travelling to Banff, he can manage to reply back to his client immediately. Though, travelling in the same country also needs planning due to different weather conditions and unfamiliar locations. Last but not least, it saves a lot of time and money which could be wasted sitting in boredom while travelling.

The seemingly inexorable debate about travelling within same country and abroad can keep on going. Nevertheless, showing deep reverence for all aspects and observing a finer nuance of the matter mentioned above, I espouse the notion of supporting the fact that travelling teaches you a lot of things such as self reliance and independence, but one should plan carefully in budget. After all the mentioned facts, going on a holiday within the country makes more sense.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that domestic travel is more convenient and practical. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the comparison between traveling to Paris and traveling within Canada. The argument is developed logically, though the conclusion is slightly contradictory; while the essay argues for domestic travel, the final sentence mentions that travel teaches independence, which slightly dilutes the focus. Overall, the response is well-developed and maintains a consistent stance throughout the body paragraphs, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Nevertheless.' However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the phrase 'the seemingly inexorable debate' in the conclusion feels slightly forced and disconnected from the preceding arguments. Despite these minor mechanical issues, the overall structure is coherent and the progression is logical, justifying a Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some flexibility. There is an attempt to use less common items like 'inexorable,' 'reverence,' and 'espouse.' However, there are some inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'feel on a cliffhanger' (which is an incorrect idiom in this context) and 'reply back to his client' (redundant). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the score from reaching the Band 8 level. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'according their preference' (missing 'to'), 'everyone cannot afford' (should be 'not everyone can afford'), and 'at least a month advance' (should be 'a month in advance'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are occasional slips. The majority of the sentences are clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. The range of structures is sufficient, but more consistent accuracy is needed for a higher band.
