IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, more people are choosing to spend their holidays in their own country instead of going abroad. I fully agree with this idea because travelling locally saves money and is better for the environment.
First of all, travelling to another country is very expensive. International plane tickets, visa fees, and hotel stays cost a lot of money. On the other hand, taking a holiday at home is cheaper. Families can easily drive their own cars, take local buses or stay at nearby hotels. This allows people to enjoy a relaxing vacation without spending too much money.
Second, domestic travel is better for the planet. Airplanes create a large amount of pollution that is harmful to the environment. Today, many people think about environmental and want to protect nature. By choosing to visit local parks and historic sites instead of taking long flights, people can save carbon footprint and help to protect the environment.
It is true that travelling abroad lets people gain experience of different cultures. However, many countries now have great attractions and cultural festivals that offer fun and interesting experiences right at home.
In conclusion, because of high costs and environmental concerns, local holidays are becoming the top choice for many people. In future, I believe more people will prefer to travel with in their own country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of domestic tourism. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of development. While the two main arguments—cost and environmental impact—are relevant, they are somewhat briefly explained. The conclusion is also quite short. To reach a higher band, you must expand on your ideas with more detailed examples or explanations to meet the length requirement and provide a more thorough exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and transition words like 'First of all', 'Second', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between paragraphs is even smoother and try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices to link sentences within paragraphs, as some connections currently feel a bit mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You use terms like 'environmental concerns', 'cultural festivals', and 'domestic travel' correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'save carbon footprint' (which should be 'reduce one's carbon footprint') and 'think about environmental' (which should be 'think about the environment'). Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations and precise academic vocabulary would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and the meaning is rarely obscured by errors. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'In future' (should be 'In the future') and 'travel with in' (should be 'travel within'). While you show control over basic grammar, incorporating a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, would demonstrate a higher level of grammatical range.
