IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In the future, more people may choose to spend their holidays in their own country instead of travelling abroad. I agree with this idea because domestic holidays are cheaper and more convenient. They can also help people support local businesses and discover interesting places in their own country.
To begin with, there is an array of reasons to believe that travelling in your own country is cheaper. People do not need to spend money on international flights or visas. For example, a family can travel by car or train and save a lot of money. The second reason is that domestic travel is more convenient. People do not have to prepare many documents or worry about language problems. They can communicate easily and usually understand the local culture. Therefore, travelling within their country can be less stressful.
Another important benefit is that domestic tourism can support the local economy. When people stay in local hotels, eat at restaurants and visit local attractions, they spend money that helps local businesses. The second benefit is that people can discover their own country. Many individuals do not know about all the beautiful places, historical sites, and cultural attractions in their country. A local holiday gives them an opportunity to learn more about their country's history and culture.
In conclusion, I agree that more people will choose to have holidays in their own country in the future. Domestic travel is cheaper and more convenient, while it also supports local businesses and helps people discover their own country's interesting places.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear position ('I agree with this idea') and supporting it with well-developed reasons. The introduction clearly outlines the main arguments: affordability, convenience, support for local businesses, and cultural discovery. These ideas are extended in the body paragraphs with relevant explanations, such as avoiding international flights and visas, as well as engaging with local tourism. The conclusion neatly reiterates the main stance without introducing new information. The overall approach satisfies the Band 7 and touches upon Band 8 descriptors for task response, as the ideas are clearly presented, extended, and supported throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introductory outline, followed by clearly demarcated body paragraphs introduced by cohesive markers such as 'To begin with' and 'Another important benefit', and ending with a concise summary in the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to link ideas within sentences, as seen with phrases like 'For example' and 'Therefore'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, meaning the information flows naturally from one point to the next, guiding the reader effortlessly through the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'an array of reasons', 'local economy', 'historical sites', and 'cultural attractions' indicate an ability to use less common items with an awareness of collocation. While the vocabulary is not overly sophisticated or ambitious, it is entirely adequate for the task and allows the writer to convey precise meanings clearly. Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout, with no noticeable errors that would impede communication, firmly placing this performance in the Band 7 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating frequent error-free sentences alongside successful complex structures (e.g., 'When people stay in local hotels, eat at restaurants and visit local attractions, they spend money that helps local businesses'). Control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong, with correct subject-verb agreement, accurate verb tenses, and appropriate use of modal verbs ('may choose', 'do not need'). Minor slips are extremely rare, and communication is never impeded. The grammatical control displayed is consistent with a solid Band 7 rating.
