Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, whether people will increasingly choose domestic holidays instead of travelling abroad has become an increasingly debated issue. While people have different views on this matter, I believe that more people may choose to spend their holidays in their own country in the future. This essay will examine the main aspects of this issue.
To begin with, one important point is that domestic holidays are often more affordable because people can avoid expensive international flights and other travel costs. This can have a significant impact on people's travel choices and personal expenses. For example, a family can travel to a nearby tourist destination by car and spend considerably less money than they would on an overseas trip. Therefore, this factor should be carefully considered.
Furthermore, another significant point is that travelling within one's own country can be more convenient because it usually requires less planning and fewer travel arrangements. This can affect both individuals and the wider community. For instance, people can take a short holiday within their own country without arranging visas, exchanging currency or spending many hours on international flights. Consequently, this aspect also deserves careful consideration.
However, it is also important to consider that some people will continue to travel abroad because they want to experience different cultures, cuisines and famous international destinations. Although this may present certain challenges, a balanced approach can help address these concerns effectively.
In conclusion, I believe that more people may choose to spend their holidays in their own country in the future. This is mainly because domestic holidays can be more affordable and travelling locally can be more convenient. Overall, these factors should be carefully considered when evaluating this issue.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on whether people will increasingly holiday domestically rather than abroad. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as families driving to nearby destinations and avoiding the hassle of visas or international flights. The response covers the main aspects of affordability and convenience, while also acknowledging the counter-argument regarding cultural experiences. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, demonstrating a solid understanding of the prompt requirements. The development of ideas aligns well with the Band 7 descriptor, as the position is clear and ideas are extended and supported, even though some points could have been pushed further into deeper sociological or economic analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to two well-structured body paragraphs, a counter-argument, and a logical conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct ideas into clear blocks. While the cohesive devices are sometimes a bit standard and formulaic rather than entirely flexible, referencing and substitution are clear, ensuring the overall progression of the argument remains coherent and easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'affordable', 'convenient', and 'international destinations'. Word choice is generally appropriate, and terms like 'personal expenses', 'tourist destination', and 'cultural experiences' are used naturally in context. However, the vocabulary tends to be somewhat repetitive, relying heavily on standard phrases like 'carefully considered' and 'significant point' rather than exploring a wider variety of sophisticated synonyms or precise lexical chunks. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout, and while the range does not quite reach the flexibility required for Band 7, it comfortably satisfies the criteria for Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over subordinate clauses and conditional structures. Examples include 'While people have different views on this matter, I believe that more people may choose...' and '...spend considerably less money than they would on an overseas trip.' There are frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is handled correctly. While there are minor instances of slight repetitiveness in sentence openings and structures, the grammatical errors are rare and do not impede communication at all. The control of grammar and punctuation leans towards the upper end of Band 6, showing solid foundational competence with good moments of complexity.
