IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that more people will choose to spend their holidays in their own country rather than travel abroad in the future. While this viewpoint holds some validity, I largely disagree with this view because international travel allows people to gain valuable knowledge, experience different cultures and broaden their horizons.
One of the major benefits of international tourism is that it provides cultural experience. This is largely because when individuals travel to abroad they have the opportunities to learn different cultures, traditions and languages. In addition, they can also taste different foods which can expose them to different flavours. For example, an individual who travel to abroad for holidays can experience different cultures, languages and foods which may change their way of thinking to other communties. Therefore, travelling abroad broadens people's horizons.
Furthermore, international travel offers unique experience. To be more precise, individuals can experience different landscapes, environment, activities and attractions while travelling abroad. Some experiences cannot be found in their own countries. Additionally, people can also spend quality time with their families while visiting new places.Different countries have their own landscapes, historical sites, cuisines and cultural activities, which can motivate people to explore places that they cannot experience at home. For example, a person who visiting to Switzerland can experience mountains, peaceful environment and breathtaking views. As a result, international tourism expose people to unique experiences.
In conclusion, although domestic tourism has certain advantages, I largely disagree that people will stop travelling abroad because it international travel offers cultural experiences and a opportunities to broaden people's perspective.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position throughout the essay regarding whether more people will holiday domestically in the future. The writer disagrees with the prompt and provides supporting reasons centered on cultural experiences and unique landscapes. However, the development of ideas in the body paragraphs tends to be repetitive and somewhat generalised. For instance, in the second body paragraph, the phrases 'experience different cultures, languages and foods' are restated in slightly different ways without advancing new conceptual points. Despite this tendency toward redundancy, a clear stance is maintained and supported throughout. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor, where relevant ideas are presented, but some aspects lack fully extended development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct supporting arguments. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For example, the transitional phrases used, such as 'To be more precise' and 'Additionally,' sometimes introduce repetitive or overlapping ideas rather than moving the argument forward logically. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, as seen in the conclusion with the phrase 'because it international travel offers,' which creates a minor grammatical and cohesive slip. Overall, the organizational structure is clear enough to follow easily, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using topic-specific terms like 'domestic tourism,' 'international tourism,' 'historical sites,' and 'breathtaking views.' There are, however, noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices throughout the text. For example, the writer uses 'travel to abroad' instead of 'travel abroad' and 'communities' misspelled as 'communties.' Attempted less common vocabulary often reveals minor collocation errors, yet the intended meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded. These features reflect the Band 6 descriptor, where the vocabulary is adequate and attempts at less common items are accompanied by some inaccuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'an individual who travel to abroad for holidays can experience...' and 'Different countries have their own landscapes... which can motivate people...'. However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the essay, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'an individual who travel' instead of 'travels', and prepositional errors such as 'a person who visiting' instead of 'visiting' or 'who visits'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and frequent minor errors is characteristic of Band 6 performance.
