IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the future, I believe many people will choose to spend their holidays in their own country rather than travel abroad. Although international travel will still remain popular, domestic travels will likely to become popular as it is convenient, affordable and environmentally friendly.
To begin with, one of the main reason is rising cost of travelling abroad. Air fares, travelling insurance and visa requiremnets are become very expensive in recent years. In contrast, domestic tours are quite cost-effective and people may enjoy their short breaks. For example, most canadians like to enjoy cananda as it is cost-effective to them and they can save their travelling time.
Another reason is that there are numerous domestic travel destinations people have not explored yet. The visit to these domestic destinations support the local businessess and it saves the lot of travelling time. People may use their travelling time to visit the local tourist attractions. It also results in the reduction of the carbon emissions.
However, travelling to abroad still remains popular as people may visit the famous foriegn tourists attractions and create unforgettable memories
To conclude, I strongly believe that despite the international travel remains popular, domestic travel is more economial and a sustainabale choice.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position agreeing that domestic travel will become more popular. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as cost-effectiveness, environmental benefits, and discovering local attractions, which align with the requirements of the task. However, the development of these ideas is uneven. For instance, the mention of Canadian travellers is somewhat limited, and the counterargument regarding foreign travel is brief and underdeveloped. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 202 words, falling significantly short of the 250-word minimum. To reach a higher band, all ideas would need to be fully extended and supported with richer examples, and the essay must meet the full word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic maintained throughout the paragraphs. The writing is divided into logical paragraphs with an appropriate introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'To begin with', 'Another reason', and 'To conclude'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, and paragraphing in the body shows some minor inconsistencies, such as the very brief fourth paragraph addressing the counterargument. To move to a higher band, the essay needs to demonstrate a more sophisticated and flexible management of cohesive devices, ensuring seamless transitions between ideas and a fully realised progression throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'cost-effective', 'carbon emissions', and 'sustainable'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors that affect lexical precision, including 'domestic travels', 'travelling insurance', 'requiremnets', 'businessess', 'foriegn', and 'economial'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on accurate word formation, natural collocations, and careful proofreading to eliminate spelling mistakes, as well as incorporating a wider variety of sophisticated vocabulary with precise control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating attempts at relative clauses and conditional-like patterns. There are, however, some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'domestic travels will likely to become popular', 'one of the main reason is', 'are become very expensive', and 'travelling to abroad'. While these errors occasionally disrupt the flow, they rarely impede overall communication. The range of structures remains somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, the student needs to produce a greater variety of error-free complex sentences and maintain a higher degree of grammatical accuracy across all structures, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and infinitive forms.
