IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In the future, a myriad of people will choose to travel within their own country over international trips. This shift is likely to occur because domestic travel is more affordable and convenient. However, I do not completely agree that international travel will decline significantly.
To commence with, travelling within own country is generally economical than going overseas. International travel involve expensive flight rates, accommodation, travel insurance and currency exchange which can make them unaffordable for the families. As a result, people may choose domestic destinations where they can travel by car or cheaper flights. Furthermore, domestic travel usually requires less preparation for travelling because travelers do not require visa arrangements and eliminates language barriers. Consequently, spending a holiday within own country can be practical and stress free.
However, international holidays are likely to remain popular because people usually choose to travel overseas to explore different culture, cuisine and languages that can not be always found domestically. Moreover, international travel can broaden people's perspective by allowing them to interact with individuals from different background. For instance, after moving from India to Canada, I had the opportunity to to experience different culture and lifestyle which significantly broadened my understanding of the world. Therefore, despite convenience of domestic travel. people will continue to choose travelling abroad for memorable and unique experience.
To conclude, domestic holiday destination may become more popular in future due to affordability, easy to organize and conveniency. I believe, international travel will remain attractive due to its cultural and educational benefits. Taking everything in to consideration, I do not agree that people will eventually choose domestic travel over international holidays.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you accept that domestic holidays may grow, but reject the claim that overseas travel will be displaced. You address both sides with relevant reasons, including cost, convenience, cultural discovery and broader perspectives, and the personal example of moving from India to Canada helps illustrate the latter. This fits a response that addresses the task and supports its ideas. To develop the argument further, explain more precisely why these trends will shape future holiday choices—for example, whether affordability will affect some groups more than others, or how international travel might remain accessible. Some claims, such as domestic travel being “stress free,” are asserted rather than demonstrated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, with the introduction establishing your position, separate paragraphs presenting the two sides, and a conclusion that restates your view. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “However,” and “For instance” help connect supporting points. This is a clear, logical organisation. At times, however, the linking feels formulaic, and the relationship between ideas could be made more precise. For example, “As a result” introduces the choice of domestic destinations, but the connection to the preceding cost point could be explained more directly. The sentence beginning “Therefore” is also interrupted by a full stop after “travel,” which disrupts the flow. Use transitions selectively and check that punctuation keeps each idea connected.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonably varied vocabulary for the topic, including “affordable,” “currency exchange,” “language barriers,” “broaden people’s perspective,” and “cultural and educational benefits.” These choices communicate your ideas clearly, and attempts at more formal phrasing such as “a myriad” show some range. However, several word choices or collocations are not fully natural: “expensive flight rates,” “different culture,” “easy to organize,” and “conveniency” weaken precision. There is also repetition of “travel” and “domestic” across the response. To strengthen your vocabulary, choose more idiomatic combinations and vary references to holidays and destinations. The meaning remains clear, but more consistent control of collocation and word forms is needed for greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the reason clause “because domestic travel is more affordable and convenient” and the relative clause “where they can travel by car or cheaper flights.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the argument is not obscured by grammatical problems. Some errors nevertheless recur in agreement, articles, infinitives and punctuation. For example, “International travel involve” should use a singular verb, while “within own country” needs a determiner. “I had the opportunity to to experience” repeats the infinitive marker, and “Therefore, despite convenience of domestic travel. people…” has faulty sentence punctuation. Review these patterns and proofread for agreement and sentence boundaries; this would make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
