IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In the future, more people will choose to go on holiday in their own country and not travel abroad on holiday. Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
I do not agree with the statement, and I strongly believe that in the future people would want to vacation abroad than in their own country.
With the economy booming and people making more money than before, their disposable income is also increasing considerably. That is why more and more people are investing it on travel. With access to money, people prefer to gain new experiences, something that they have not seen before. And this is where foreign travel fits in. This year I got a surprisingly bigger bonus than last year. So instead of vacationing in my own country, I decided to chip in a little more money and travel to Europe. To witness a culture which is completely different from my own. I was completely mesmerized by the architecture and natural beauty there, and I also got to learn a thing or two about their culture. That trip changed my perspective towards life. I learnt that there is way more to life than the usual hustle-bustle of office. And I am trying to reinvent myself by adding a new hobby to my schedule. All the credit goes to the Europe trip.
The other reason is foreign travel becoming extensively popular among the social group of people. It has become a status symbol for most. People are greatly influenced by this while planning a vacation. One example is that it has nowdays become an unsaid rule to have your bachelor's party in Thailand. All of my friends have had their parties there. Each one being more extravangant than their predecessor. People save up for months to plan this trip. This is not just limited to bachelor parties, it has become mandatory for newly weds to go to some foreign location on their honeymoon. Relatives and friends would usually ask the couple where they are planning to go on a holiday after the wedding. So it has become a societal expectation in most of these cases.
Therefore, people might plan to travel abroad because they have a little more money to spend on vacations and want to gain new experiences, or it is expected from them by the society. Whatever be the case, this has lead to a large number of people traveling to foreign countries. And I believe that it is something which will only increase in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear from the opening: you disagree and expect overseas holidays to become more popular. You address the future trend with two relevant reasons—rising disposable income and social expectations—and support them with personal examples, including your Europe trip and friends’ celebrations in Thailand. The explanation of how travel broadened your perspective gives the first reason useful development. The second is also illustrated, though the claims that foreign trips are a “status symbol” or a “mandatory” honeymoon choice are quite broad; qualify these claims or explain how widespread they are. The conclusion restates your view consistently. More balanced development of the reasons, with clearer links to why they will shape future choices, would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs develop separate reasons, and the conclusion returns to the prediction. Progression within the first body paragraph is especially easy to follow, moving from income to new experiences and then to your own trip. Phrases such as “That is why,” “The other reason,” and “Therefore” help signal relationships between ideas. At times, however, the links feel a little mechanical, and some details interrupt the main line of argument—for example, the extended account of how the Europe trip changed your lifestyle. The short fragments beginning “To witness a culture” and “Each one being more extravagant” also make the flow less smooth. Tighter links between examples and the future trend would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonably varied vocabulary for the topic, including “disposable income,” “mesmerized,” “status symbol,” “societal expectation,” and “perspective.” These choices help explain both personal benefits and social influences, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also some imprecise or informal combinations: “investing it on travel” is not a natural collocation, while “a little more money” and “a thing or two” are conversational. Spelling errors such as “nowdays” and “extravagant” misspelled as “extravangant” show that accuracy is not fully consistent. Aim for more precise, natural collocations and proofread spelling; this would make the vocabulary more flexible and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses with “while,” “because,” and “which,” and many sentences communicate your ideas clearly. Some grammatical control is evident in sentences such as “With the economy booming and people making more money than before, their disposable income is also increasing considerably.” However, several sentence fragments interrupt otherwise clear writing: “To witness a culture which is completely different from my own” and “Each one being more extravagant than their predecessor.” There are also errors in verb form and agreement, as in “this has lead” and “Each one … their predecessor,” and the opening “people would want to vacation abroad than” has an incomplete comparison structure. Check sentence completeness, comparison patterns, and verb forms to make your varied structures more consistently accurate.
