Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jhon,

Hope you doing well and your life going smooth. I received you massage regarding a new outdoor game you wanna try to play in summer holiday.

I should love to suggest the game that you find interesting and familiar to baseball that you played in your childhood. The name of this game is cricket. It is easy to play and learn the game.

Cricket has same as baseball. In cricket player have to hit the ball with cricket bat rather then baseball bat but instead of home run you have to make countless run until the counted over finish. I other team out you by catch or stump or run out you have to go onto bench. Which team will have more run wins.

I am very found of playing the cricket so I will teach you this game personally . After you learn the game we will play to gather with some of my childhood friend. You will definitely enjoy it.

I will waiting for you response with time and date when we start playing.

Your lovingly Friend

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task: recommending a sport (cricket), explaining how to learn it, and suggesting learning it together. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how to play cricket is confusing and contains inaccuracies regarding the rules, which makes the advice less helpful. While the task requirements are met, the content could be more clearly articulated to ensure the friend fully understands the recommendation and the learning process.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices, such as 'After you learn the game' and 'Which team will have more run wins'. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'I other team out you by catch or stump'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved with more varied linking words to create a smoother, more natural reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'I should love to suggest' (instead of 'I would love to suggest') and 'I am very found of' (instead of 'fond of'). Additionally, 'massage' is used instead of 'message'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and the errors in collocation and spelling occasionally distract the reader. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more accurate collocations and checking for common spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'Hope you doing well' (missing auxiliary verb), 'your life going smooth' (missing verb), and 'I will waiting for you response' (incorrect verb tense). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are also inconsistent. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Increasing the accuracy of basic sentence construction and verb forms will significantly improve your score.
