Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Dishant

Hope you are doing well. I was checking my email and saw your inquiry about learning a new sport, and in regard to that, there is a summer camp near my house which has various sport activities and their respective professional staff. I was hoping to learn any new sport myself this summer and after thinking about it, volleyball seems best amongst all. because It helps us to improve our reflexes and might help us to get in our school volleyball team.

according to me, this might be the best option for you as well as we can start this together and by helping each other we can get good at it quickly.

Summer camp staff can provide us with professional equipment and training which will help us get good at volleyball in no time. Looking forward to see you at camp and learn new things together.

Best wishes

Take care

Hevan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You recommend volleyball, explain that the summer camp provides professional training, and suggest learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the camp, you could have provided more specific details about why this particular sport is suitable for your friend beyond just 'improving reflexes'. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are expanded with more descriptive language or personal reasoning to fully engage the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'and', 'as well as', and 'because' to link your sentences. However, the paragraphing is a bit fragmented; some paragraphs consist of only one or two sentences, which disrupts the flow. To improve, try to group related ideas into more substantial paragraphs and use a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to create a smoother, more professional connection between your thoughts.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'inquiry', 'respective', and 'professional staff'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for an informal email. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'get good at it' and 'get in our school volleyball team', which are slightly repetitive and informal. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repeating the same verbs. Expanding your vocabulary to include more varied adjectives and adverbs would help elevate your writing to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'because It helps' (capitalization error), 'get in our school' (should be 'get on'), and 'Looking forward to see you' (should be 'seeing'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and sentence fragments. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage to improve your accuracy.
