Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jack,
I hope you are doing well, I am writing you to recomend a sport or a game which is famous arround us and you will learn it easily.
The game I would like to recommed you is the hockey, which is the national game of pakistan. This game is easy to learn and you will learn this game in the playgound which is next to your house. The hockey is very suitable game for you because you like such games in which we do physical activity.
You can learn this game in the playground I have told you, and you can see the people playing in the evening and you will learn basic rules of game by watching them playing hockey. Furthermore, we will cosult the coach of the game in order to learn properly.
I would like to join you while learning this game because this time would be perfect to learn the game and we will spend time with each other. This time in which we learn hockey would be the perfect time of the year.
If you need further help, please don't hesitate to ask anything.
Warm regards,
Saqib

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You recommend hockey, explain how to learn it (by watching others and consulting a coach), and suggest learning it together. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for example, the mention of the playground is repeated in the second and third paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces new information or extends the existing points rather than restating them. Overall, the purpose of the email is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'because', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between ideas is occasionally mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the internal structure of the second and third paragraphs could be improved to avoid repeating the same information about the playground. Using a wider variety of linking words or pronouns to refer back to previously mentioned concepts would improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'consult', 'physical activity', and 'hesitate'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'recomend' (recommend), 'arround' (around), and 'cosult' (consult). Additionally, the use of 'the' before 'hockey' is unnecessary in this context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on correct spelling and more natural collocations will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing you to recomend' (should be 'writing to recommend'), 'the hockey' (remove 'the'), and 'the playground which is next to your house' (could be simplified to 'the nearby playground'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there is a comma splice in the first sentence ('...doing well, I am writing...'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage.
