Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter in regards to the faulty laptop that I have received this Monday.

I bought this laptop from your online store in latest mega day sale. It is a grey color Apple Macbook with 512 gb ram storage, in addtion, it costs me around 1550 CAD.

When I received my package, I found out that it has some scratches on the external surface. When I turned it on I found out that there is a problem with screen visuals. Later on, after doing a thorough research on internet I found out that this might happened due to improper handling of product while delivering.

I know these kinds of problems are normal in online delivery. So, I want you to either replace my order or I will visit your nearest dealer to pickup my new order .

I hope to hear from you soon which option is convenient to you .

Yours faithfully.

Deepak

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The task instructions required you to write an email to a friend recommending a sport, explaining how to learn it, and suggesting you learn it together. Instead, you wrote a formal letter of complaint to a company regarding a faulty laptop. Because you failed to address any of the bullet points or the intended audience, the response does not meet the requirements of the task. In an actual IELTS examination, this would result in a very low score for Task Achievement as the content is entirely irrelevant to the prompt provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is structured as a formal complaint, which is internally consistent in terms of paragraphing and logical flow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'When I received', 'Later on', and 'So', which help the reader follow your argument regarding the faulty product. However, because the content is completely unrelated to the task prompt, the overall coherence is undermined by the failure to address the actual topic. While the paragraphing is clear and the progression of the complaint is logical, the lack of relevance to the task prevents a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to express your complaint, using terms like 'faulty', 'external surface', 'improper handling', and 'convenient'. There are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in latest mega day sale' (should be 'in the latest mega sale') and '512 gb ram storage' (RAM and storage are different things). However, the vocabulary is generally adequate for the purpose of writing a formal complaint. You are able to convey your meaning clearly, even though the topic is incorrect for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this letter in regards to the faulty laptop that I have received' (the present perfect 'have received' is unnecessary here; 'received' is better), 'this might happened' (should be 'might have happened'), and 'I hope to hear from you soon which option is convenient to you' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some issues with spacing before commas. The errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to limit the score.
