IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:
- recommend a new sport that would be suitable for your friend to learn
- explain how your friend could learn this sport
- suggest that you both learn this sport together
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my complaint for a product I purchased from your website.
I ordered the laptop through your official website on 18 July after reading the product description, and it was delivered to my address three days later.
To my disappointment, the laptop was not in satisfactory condition. The packaging was torn, and the device had a dent on one corner. I noticed that the laptop I received was different from the one I had ordered. The advertisement stated that it would have a light keyboard a 15.6-inch Full HD display. However, the laptop delivered had an old keyboard with no lights and a smaller screen than 15.6.
As this product is both damaged and different from what was advertised, I kindly request that you arrange a replacement with the correct model at no additional cost. If this cannot be done within a reasonable time, I would appreciate a full refund.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Sejal gakhar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response is completely off-topic. The task required an informal email to a friend recommending a sport, but you wrote a formal letter of complaint regarding a faulty laptop purchase. Because you failed to address any of the bullet points (recommending a sport, explaining how to learn it, or suggesting learning it together), the task achievement is severely impacted. While the length requirement was met, the content does not fulfill the prompt instructions at all. To improve, ensure you carefully read the task instructions and identify the required tone and content before beginning your writing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically structured as a formal complaint, with clear paragraphing and appropriate opening and closing salutations. You use cohesive devices such as 'To my disappointment', 'However', and 'As this product is...' to link ideas effectively. While the content is irrelevant to the prompt, the internal structure of the text itself is coherent and easy to follow. If the content had matched the task, this would be a well-organized piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint, such as 'satisfactory condition', 'advertisement', 'arrange a replacement', and 'reasonable time'. The word choice is precise and appropriate for the context of a formal letter. There are no spelling errors, and the vocabulary is used naturally. While the topic is incorrect, the lexical control shown is quite strong and indicates a good command of English for formal correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The grammar is generally accurate with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use passive voice correctly ('was delivered', 'was not in satisfactory condition') and handle conditional structures well ('If this cannot be done...'). There are very few grammatical errors, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. The control of tense and sentence structure is consistent, which makes the writing easy to read and professional in tone.
