Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jack,
I’m writing this letter to give you advice about a new sport you can learn from near community centre.
Badminton is one of the most interesting games. You have been watching this game since college time, and it is easy for you to learn and make it as a professional game afterwards. It can also help you to boost your academic scores as extra curriculum would be considered at final exams.
There are many community centres are available near your home. You can enrol any one of them which is close to your home, and practice is the best option to gain an experience in this game.
Moreover, I can also start with you as many centres offer discount for dual membership. It would also help me to enhance my overall fitness and well- being. In this way, we can share tricks and become perfect in the upcoming months.
I hope this information will help you!
Warm wishes,
Randeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended badminton, explained how to learn it through local community centres, and proposed learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is slightly limited. For instance, the claim that badminton helps with academic scores is a bit unusual and could have been explained more clearly to sound more convincing. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively, maintaining a consistent focus on the topic throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'In this way' to connect your ideas. While the paragraphing is functional, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For example, the transition between the suggestion of the sport and the explanation of how to learn it is a bit abrupt. Nevertheless, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use phrases like 'dual membership' and 'enhance my overall fitness' effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'from near community centre' (should be 'at a local community centre') and 'enrol any one of them' (should be 'enroll in one of them'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for an informal email.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'There are many community centres are available' (a double verb structure) and 'practice is the best option to gain an experience' (unnecessary article). Despite these slips, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. You have a good grasp of basic sentence construction, but you should focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve your accuracy. Your punctuation is generally correct and supports the clarity of your writing.
