Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Amy,
How are you doing? I hope this letter meets you well? I received the sms you sent request me to suggest a new sports for you to learn.
Trust me when I say that learning a new sports comes from how willing you are to practice often. I will recommend you learn football. Football is a sports that helps you both in body exercise, and also makes you agile. It is played with a ball, which I believe you know what that is, and it is sectioned in teams with 11 players in each. It is basically passing the ball to your team members, not allowing your opponent get the ball and then scoring a goal at your opponent’s post.
Learning this sports isn’t such a great deal. You can do that by joining individuals that practice at the field. They meet every weekend by 4:30pm and they accept new members.
Luckily, I have always had an interest in football, so I would suggest I join you in learning it. That way, it will be a bit easier because you would have a familiar face around and it’s been long we did something fun together so, I think this will be a great opportunity.
Let me know what you think about this.
Yours friendly,
Oluoma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended football, explained how to learn it by joining a local group, and suggested learning it together. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the email is clear throughout. To improve, you could provide more specific detail in the 'how to learn' section, such as mentioning what equipment is needed or what a typical training session involves, which would help to fully develop your ideas and move toward a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Luckily' and 'That way' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing is always clear. For example, in the second paragraph, the explanation of football could be more smoothly integrated to improve the overall progression of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, and your meaning is always clear. You use some relevant terms like 'agile', 'opponent', and 'opportunity'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'request me to suggest' (should be 'asking me to suggest') and 'Yours friendly' (which is not a standard closing; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes' would be more natural). Expanding your range of collocations would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope this letter meets you well' (a common idiom is 'I hope this letter finds you well'), 'a new sports' (should be 'a new sport'), and 'not allowing your opponent get the ball' (should be 'not allowing your opponent to get the ball'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and infinitive structures.
