Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rita,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to suggest you that you should join classes to learn a new sport.

I would like to suggest that you should start learning swimming because you have keen interest in sports and you want to make your career in games. In school, you had participated in several games such as crickets, tennis, and writing competitions.

In our locality, there is a community wellness center from 26 July they are starting a new batch for swimming. booking will going to be start from 20 July upto 21 July. By paying $ 20 per class you can learn a new skill.

I would also like to learn swimming because I like swimming and it is very conveinent for me to reach center because it is very close to my home.

Catchup soon.

Best Regards,

Shivani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points: recommending a sport (swimming), explaining how to learn it (community center classes), and suggesting learning together. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall development of ideas. The explanation of how to learn is clear, but the suggestion to learn together is quite brief. To improve, you should expand on the benefits of learning together or provide more detail about the logistics to ensure the response is fully developed and meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email is logically organized into paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the recommendation, logistics, and the final suggestion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the recommendation and the logistics could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition') would help the flow of the text and improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You used some relevant terms like 'community wellness center' and 'skill'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'keen interest in sports' (should be 'a keen interest') and 'make your career in games' (which sounds unnatural). The spelling of 'conveinent' is incorrect. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of common words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'suggest you that you should' (redundant), 'booking will going to be start' (incorrect verb form), and 'upto' (should be 'up to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of spaces around symbols. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage to improve accuracy.
