Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rajesh,

Hope you're doing well. I am writing this letter to give you advice about learning new skills of sport. I would like to recommend you to learn badminton.

In my town, there're many sports teaching institutes but I would suggest you to one of the famous one is Khalsa institute, which is situated in my town. Moreover, you have to take public transport everyday to visit this Centre as they don't provide any transport facility.

I am also looking forward to take an admission in this teaching institute. Therefore, we can learn about this sport together. Hope we will do better together as we're good in sports. Furthermore, I will ask my parents to pay my fees, so that I could learn some more extra-curriculum activity with this. Moreover, one of our other friend is already got enrolled there. We all will be together there and will have fun together.

Take Care

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: recommending a sport (badminton), explaining how to learn it (Khalsa institute), and suggesting learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how to learn the sport focuses heavily on the logistics of transport rather than the actual learning process or why the institute is a good choice. To improve, try to expand on the benefits of the sport or the specific nature of the classes to provide a more comprehensive response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email is organized into logical paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Furthermore' to link your sentences. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used in contexts where they do not flow naturally, such as the transition to the mention of your parents paying fees. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'I would suggest you to one of the famous one is Khalsa institute', which lacks grammatical cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'teaching institutes', 'enrolled', and 'public transport'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'learning new skills of sport' (learning a new sport), 'take an admission' (enroll), and 'extra-curriculum activity' (extracurricular activity). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise usage of common collocations to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'there're many sports teaching institutes' (there are), 'I would suggest you to one of the famous one' (I would suggest one of the most famous ones), and 'one of our other friend is already got enrolled' (one of our other friends has already enrolled). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice and articles.
