Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Emma,
How are you? It's been a long time since we have not met. I hope you are doing well. I am writing to you to recommend a new sport which you were asking last month.
I thought of emailing you earlier but could not do as I was doing some research on our new sport. I recently found out which sport would be suitable for us to learn. The sport that is suitable for us is an indoor activities. I hope you you would be happy to hear about it. It is about swimming.
As there are lots of community center here, I thought of registering ourselves as a member, so that we can go everyday and practice with my professional friend. My friend, Allison had shown her interest to teach us how to swim. If not you can learn from professional swimmer. There are lots of swimming centers for adults where you can enroll.
However, my suggestion would be to learn together with my friend Allison. This will not only help us to learn swimming but also to save money.
I hope you would like this sport and would be eager to start as early as possible. Looking forward to hear from you.
Best Regards,
Nya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task: recommending a sport (swimming), explaining how to learn it (joining a community center/getting lessons from a friend), and suggesting learning together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how to learn is a bit repetitive and slightly confusing regarding whether you are learning from a friend or a professional. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are more clearly structured and fully explained to provide a more cohesive response to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The email is generally easy to follow, and you have used paragraphing to separate your ideas. There is a logical progression from the greeting to the recommendation and the final suggestion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition 'However, my suggestion would be...' which does not perfectly fit the context of the preceding paragraph. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the shift between 'my professional friend' and 'my friend Allison'. Improving the variety of linking words would help the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary like 'community center', 'professional swimmer', and 'enroll'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'indoor activities' (should be singular 'activity' or 'an indoor sport') and 'since we have not met' (a more natural phrasing would be 'since we last met'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'which you were asking last month' (should be 'about which you were asking'), 'could not do as' (should be 'could not do so'), and 'Looking forward to hear from you' (should be 'Looking forward to hearing from you'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on verb patterns and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
