Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam,

How've you been? I'm glad to hear that you are planning learn a new sport, and there are way too many options in our locality if you are asking me.

If I were you, I would have chosen to join for swimming course, and I believe that it would be a great option for you. More than being a sport, it is a life saving course, and it may help you to save yourself and others under many under water circumstances. Also, it is better to learn something which is better for the whole body, and maintain a healthier life.

You may contact the Y.M.C.A aquatic center, as they are offering free swimming starter course for the residents in our community for three months, and later if you wish to continue, the fees they charge is very less compared to any other aquatic centers.

Let me know if you are interested in joining, because I too was planning to join for the swimming and was looking for some to accompany me.

Regards

Gokul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You recommend swimming, explain how to learn it by mentioning the Y.M.C.A aquatic center, and suggest learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of the benefits of swimming and the practical advice regarding the local center. The response is fully relevant to the prompt and maintains a consistent focus on the requirements provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Also' and 'because' to link sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to connect ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points, which contributes to the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'aquatic center' and 'life saving course' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'join for swimming course' (should be 'join a swimming course') and 'fees they charge is very less' (should be 'much lower'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Using more precise collocations would enhance the naturalness of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences ('If I were you, I would have chosen...'). There are some grammatical slips, such as 'planning learn' (should be 'planning to learn') and 'looking for some to accompany me' (should be 'looking for someone'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor errors in article usage and prepositional phrases. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not interfere with the reader's understanding of your message.
