Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Ray,
I am writing this letter in response to your letter for which you were asking for learing a new sport.
I would suggest that you should start learn basketball, as it is the most renouned sport in this country. Once you are familier to this sport, as it is very easy to play, you can find a basketball court in almost every area and enjoy the sport.
This sport is a high intensity and calories burner sport. It not only helps you increase your speed for running and daugging the ball but it will also help you regain your stamina and maintain your need for your routine exercise.
I suppose we should play basketball together. There is this gym which is a 10 minute walk from your place, where you can join the membership for the gym and can star playing with me and my team. In that way we will be able to connect atleast once in a week.
I am looking forward for having our good old days of playing together with you sooner.
Yours Truely,
Darshan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: recommending a sport (basketball), explaining how to learn it, and suggesting you play together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To improve, ensure that your opening sentence is more natural; for example, instead of 'in response to your letter for which you were asking', a simpler 'thanks for your letter asking for advice' would be more idiomatic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The email is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Once you are', 'It not only helps', and 'In that way', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places. For instance, the connection between the gym membership and the suggestion to play together is clear, but the phrasing is slightly repetitive. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used effectively to structure the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'high intensity', 'stamina', and 'membership'. However, there are several spelling errors and minor word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'renouned' (renowned), 'familier' (familiar), 'daugging' (dodging), and 'star' (start). Additionally, 'calories burner sport' is not a standard collocation; 'calorie-burning sport' would be more natural. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of your message. Focusing on proofreading for spelling and common collocations will help you reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'Once you are familiar... you can find' and the 'not only... but also' construction. There are several grammatical slips, including 'start learn' (should be 'start learning'), 'familier to' (should be 'familiar with'), and 'looking forward for having' (should be 'looking forward to having'). While these errors are frequent, the meaning remains clear throughout the email. To improve, pay closer attention to verb patterns (e.g., 'start' + gerund) and prepositional phrases after specific adjectives or verbs.
