Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hi Jay,

I am pleased to know that you are planning to learn a new sport.

Firstly, in my opinion you should enrol yourself in a cricket club of Mississauga city that would be quite appropriate as it will provide you the chance to know more about the sport and facilities.

Also, you could explore many things such as you would get an assistance from professional coach, training sessions, and they also provide one on one interaction.

Furthermore, you would be quite delighted to know that I am also a part of that club so you will get a chance to spend some time with me as well as it will help you to get rid off your hectic life and busy schedule.

I look forward hearing from you soon.

Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: recommending a sport, explaining how to learn it, and suggesting you learn it together. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which limits the development of your ideas. To improve, you should expand on your suggestions with more detail. For example, instead of just mentioning a cricket club, you could describe why cricket is a great way to stay fit or what specific skills your friend might enjoy learning. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, but the lack of length prevents a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email is logically organized, and you have used some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Also', and 'Furthermore' to connect your ideas. However, the paragraphing is quite limited, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The transition between the recommendation and the suggestion to join together feels a bit abrupt. To improve, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear idea and use a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural progression of thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'enrol', 'professional coach', and 'interaction'. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'get an assistance' (should be 'get assistance') and 'get rid off' (should be 'get rid of'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise or descriptive language to make your writing more engaging and sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'enrol yourself in a cricket club of Mississauga city' (should be 'in a cricket club in Mississauga') and 'I look forward hearing' (should be 'I look forward to hearing'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the email. To improve, focus on mastering prepositions and verb patterns, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater grammatical control.
