Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Derrick,

It feels like ages since we last met! I have been asked to suggest a game to you. Here is my take; you should try "Cricket".

As you are a native of Canada, I know the prevalence of Cricket is not that much here in North America. I suggest this game to you because I know your personality to like thrill and adventure. This is a perfect game to learn and play. I have been playing it since my childhood. For you, it would be a new and captivating experience.

We could join an academy called "MS Dhoni Academy"; it is in the vicinity of my home, and it would be convenient for you as well. They have extremely good trainers and have remarkable performance in this field.

As of now, I have only played cricket using a leather ball. It will be new for me as well to play with a season ball. However, original matches have always been played with season balls only. It will be thrilling and fun for us.

I hope you will like my suggestion.

Your faithfully,

Dharm Brahmbhatt

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You recommended cricket, explained how to learn it by joining an academy, and suggested learning it together. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the sport or the learning process to further develop your ideas, as some points are slightly brief. However, the task requirements are fully met, and the purpose of the email is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As you are', 'However', and 'As of now' to connect your thoughts. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The referencing is clear, and the letter follows a standard structure that is easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prevalence', 'vicinity', and 'captivating'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'season ball' (which is likely a misunderstanding of 'leather ball' or 'red ball' terminology) and 'Your faithfully' (which should be 'Yours faithfully'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure that technical terms related to the sport are used accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and errors in grammar and punctuation are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, 'It feels like ages since we last met!' is a natural opening. There are minor errors, such as 'I know your personality to like thrill' (which should be 'I know you like thrill') and the incorrect sign-off. Overall, your control of grammar is good, and you show an ability to construct varied sentences, which is appropriate for this level.
