Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Ram,

How are you? I hope you are doing well. I was thrilled, when I heard about that, you want to learn a new sport activity in your leisure time. I am glad you want my suggestion to choose a new game.

I would like to recommend you, the badminton game, because of several reasons. Firstly, this game does not required expensive equipment. You just need a racket and some shuttlecock. Moreover, this game requires a lot of physical movement, so it will help you make your self physically fit.

Our community sports club has badminton court, you can enroll yourself with minimal fees amount. They also provide one week free training sessions, where you can learn the basic rules about the badminton.

Why not we will join this club in pair? We can learn the badminton together and while playing we can spend quality time together. Let me know what you think?

I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Parm

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended badminton, explained how to learn it through the local club, and proposed learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the benefits of the sport or provide more specific details about the 'quality time' you hope to spend together to add more depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Why not' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the recommendation and the explanation of how to learn could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the task. The referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'shuttlecock', 'racket', and 'training sessions'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'badminton game' (usually just 'badminton') and 'minimal fees amount' (should be 'minimal fees'). While you attempt to use a variety of words, some phrasing is slightly repetitive. Expanding your range of collocations and using more natural expressions would help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'does not required' (should be 'does not require') and 'Why not we will join' (should be 'Why don't we join'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some unnecessary commas, such as in 'I was thrilled, when I heard'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the email, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct formation of questions.
