Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear John,

I am writing in response to give you an advice about learning a sport i.e. basketball, which is recently introduced in our nation and a quite popular game in North American countries. This game would be more suitable for you as you have a great experience in handball, which is quite similar in handling and moving.

I am pretty sure that you can easily adapt the general knowledge about basketball from internet, which gives you a keen information about some rules of this sport. Thereafter, you may visit to our high school playground which is recently renovated for basketball by local community. Apart from this, the local organizations are planning to hire a professional coach for this game by next month. It would be a great help for all sport seekers.

I am also interested to learn this international game to build my career in sports. I am available for weekday evenings, and weekend mornings. We may join playground together to start learning this new game and refresh the childhood memories.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Gurjot Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly recommend basketball, explain how to learn it through online resources and local facilities, and propose learning together. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing specific details such as the mention of the high school playground and the hiring of a professional coach. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this', 'Thereafter', and 'I am also', which help connect your sentences. However, some transitions could be more natural to improve the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate for an email format, and the overall structure is coherent, making the message easy to understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'professional coach', 'international game', and 'handball'. There are a few minor issues with word choice, such as 'give you an advice' (advice is uncountable) and 'keen information' (which is not a standard collocation). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied and precise collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'which is recently introduced' (should be 'which has recently been introduced') and 'visit to our high school' (the verb 'visit' does not take a preposition), these errors do not impede communication. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the sentence structures are varied enough to maintain interest. Focusing on verb tense consistency and article usage will help improve your accuracy further.
