Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. Last day , we had talk regarding new activity which you are eager to learn however , you are wondering that what kind of sports should learn in these days .
Although all the sports have equal importance , however i consider that you should join basketball . According to me , you will get extra advantage in this game owing to your tall height. As we know , ball point is located at high altitude and your height would assist you to make goal for the team. Moreover , this game will help you to stay physically fit as this need too much practice to become team icon .
There is a playground near to the church street where one of coach is giving free training to those who is willing to succeed in this sports.
If you want i can also join you in this game. We can play in one team which help us to retain our interest in basketball for years.
I am looking forward to hearing back from you.
Yours sincerely,
Harshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: recommending a sport (basketball), explaining how to learn it (free coaching at Church Street), and suggesting learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how to learn the sport is quite brief, and the suggestion to learn together could be expanded to include more specific plans. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully extended with more descriptive detail while maintaining the informal, friendly tone required for a General Training Task 1 letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The email is logically organized with clear paragraphing that separates the introduction, the recommendation, the practical details, and the closing. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'If you want', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as 'Last day, we had talk'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'one of coach', which lacks a determiner. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'eager', 'physically fit', and 'succeed'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'ball point is located at high altitude' (instead of 'the hoop is high up') and 'make goal' (instead of 'score a basket'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do show a limitation in your control over natural English collocations. To improve, focus on learning common phrases associated with sports and hobbies rather than translating directly from your first language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the church street', 'one of coach'), subject-verb agreement ('this need too much practice'), and pluralization ('this sports'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to basic grammar rules such as the use of articles and ensuring that verbs agree with their subjects. Proofreading your work for these small, recurring errors would significantly boost your score.
