Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Alan,
I hope this email finds you well. I am glad you are seeking advice from me on learning a new sport. I would suggest that you learn football.
I feel like that would be the right sport for you to learn. During school times we used to play during our leisure time and that time you used to say that you would keep it continue playing it. But, somehow you ended up in a different school so we stopped playing. You have the perfect physique and strength for this game.
There is a well-known football academy near our town who have the best-trained coach and good fields on which you could learn. They have turf surfaced gounds by which the chances of injury would be minimal.
I would also like to join you for this, and while learning football you can help me to improve my English skills. Once again because of you we would have a great opportunity to play and learn football.
I hope this helps and would appreciate if i can join you.
Regards,
Adam

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended football, explained how to learn it by mentioning a local academy, and clearly suggested learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and developed sufficiently to meet the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the academy or the training schedule to further extend your ideas, but overall, the response is complete and fulfills the purpose of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Once again' and 'I would also like to', to link your thoughts. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. For instance, the connection between your past school experiences and the current recommendation could be more explicitly stated to improve the overall progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'leisure time', 'physique', and 'minimal'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'keep it continue playing it' and 'turf surfaced gounds', which sound slightly unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your word choices are precise and contextually appropriate for an informal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'near our town who have' (should be 'which has'), 'by which the chances' (should be 'where the chances'), and 'if i can join you' (should be 'if I could join you'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and capitalization slips, such as the lowercase 'i'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your accuracy in subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency will help improve your score.
