Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Jasmeen,

How's everything going? I'm excited to tell you about new sport that I feel we must learn.

As you know I keen on to watching sports. I went to cheer our mutual friend Miya at her sports match, I was so amazed to see her playing badminton. I had hidden urge to learn this sport from ages. What are your thoughts on this? I can imagine you playing this sport because you have potential to learn it quickly with those long legs and arms.

Guess what, she also introduced me with one of her coaches. I have already asked him requirements and assistant sessions for joining it. All we need is to commute to the stadium and they gon'na give access to every other equipment needed.

Its been ages since I last seen you. So there no better opportunity than this to meet up everyday at the stadium for badminton. Its like cherry on the cake, we can chit-chat along with getting some wonderful skills. what you think?

Take care

Manjot.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You recommended badminton, explained how to learn it through a coach and stadium access, and invited your friend to join you. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the 'assistant sessions' or the specific benefits of the sport to further develop your ideas, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email is logically organized with clear paragraph breaks for each point. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As you know', 'Guess what', and 'So', which help the flow of the letter. However, some transitions feel slightly abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between mentioning the coach and the stadium could be more fluidly connected.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using informal expressions like 'chit-chat' and 'cherry on the cake' effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'assistant sessions' (likely meaning 'introductory' or 'training' sessions) and 'I keen on to watching'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring correct word forms will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I'm excited to tell you about new sport' (missing article), 'I keen on to watching' (incorrect verb form), and 'I last seen you' (missing auxiliary verb). Additionally, 'gon'na' is too informal even for an email. While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and auxiliary verbs.
