Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Jay,

How is everything going? It's being long time since we meet. I am happy that finally you got your dream job in our town. I am writing this email to suggest you play football.

Recently, a new football club has opened nearby the townhall. I have visited it a few weeks ago. There is lots of new sports options in newly opened club. I recommend you play football because, I remember that you were keen to play football during school time, but unfortunitlly there was no football ground in our school. Moreover, play this sport will help you to stay fit and healthy.

As I have played it a long time ago, I think it is very easy to learn. Even you can learn it in from You Tube there are plenty of toturils available for free. In addition, you can pratice it at your home during free time, it is very easy you just need to know basic rules.

I am also planning to learn football, because I want to take a part in our society's annual sport competition. We both can go to the club on weekends because it is just 10 minutes walk from my house.

I hope this information will help you. Looking forward for hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You recommend football, explain how to learn it through online tutorials and practice, and suggest learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the benefits of the sport or provide more specific details about the club to add depth to your suggestions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email is logically organized with clear paragraphing, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'because', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'it' in 'it is very easy' could be clearer). The progression of ideas is generally smooth, and the letter follows a standard structure for an informal email, making it easy for the reader to follow your points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'recommend', 'tutorials', and 'competition'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'unfortunitlly' (unfortunately), 'toturils' (tutorials), and 'pratice' (practice). Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'take a part' instead of 'take part'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more attention to spelling and common collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'It's being long time' (It has been a long time), 'since we meet' (since we met), and 'nearby the townhall' (near the town hall). There are also issues with article usage and verb tenses. While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
