Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mike
I hope this letter finds you well. I have received your letter and I am so glade to know that you want to learn new sport and for that you need my advice. I will surely help you with selecting sport which can help you in your busy lifestyle.
There are many sports which you can learn. However as per my opinion you should try to learn badminton game. There are several benefits to learn this game. To begin with, to play this game you not required big ground for instance football or cricket ground. You can play indoor for example sports club. Not only that this game not required more players. Game can be played with total 2 players. Another main benefit of this game is it is not required only physical strength but also required thinking. As it required lots of concentration.
You will be amaze by knowing that I am also interested to learn this game. Not only that but I have found coach also who will teach us. We just need to spend daily 1 hour during evening hours at University sports club. Please let me know your availability.
Please give my regards to your family member. If you required any additional information then please let me know.
Yours lovingly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You recommended badminton, explained how to learn it (via a coach at a sports club), and suggested learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'how to learn' section by mentioning specific skills or equipment needed, which would add more depth to the development of your ideas. Overall, the task is fully covered.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The email is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Not only that', and 'Another main benefit', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the referencing (e.g., 'this game') is always clear. The progression of ideas is logical, making the letter easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'physical strength', 'concentration', and 'sports club'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'glade' instead of 'glad' and 'badminton game' (it is more natural to just say 'badminton'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure spelling is accurate. While the vocabulary is sufficient for the task, incorporating more sophisticated or varied expressions would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles (e.g., 'you not required' instead of 'you do not require', 'it is not required only physical strength' instead of 'it requires not only physical strength'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of auxiliary verbs. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while ensuring accuracy will help you achieve a higher band.
