Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mitali,

I hope you are doing well. I am happy to hear that you asking my suggestions for learning a new sport.

Actually, swimming would be one of the best water sport for you, as It is a life-saving skill and allow you to get relief from hot summer days. Moreover, swimming is a best aquatic exercise and it will strengthen your back and core muscles, which improve your flexibility and fitness over time.

In my town, there are plenty of swimming schools available, where you can go for training and learn about how to swim and other advanced swimming techniques. Also, swimming school authorities encourage their students to take part in a swimming competition and build confidence. Swimming training course is last for a week and you will get certificate.

It would be grateful if we both join swimming school together in order to spend quality time after a long time. Additionally, I will teach you other latest swimming techniques like butterfly and side stroke during spare time.

I hope my suggestion will be helpful to you in order to learn a new sport. I look forward to your prompt response in this matter.

Best regards,

Twinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: recommending a sport, explaining how to learn it, and suggesting a joint activity. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'how to learn' section by providing more specific details about the training process or the environment of the swimming school, rather than just stating that classes are available. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between the benefits of swimming and the availability of schools could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural and less like a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'aquatic exercise', 'flexibility', and 'fitness'. There are some minor word choice errors, such as 'swimming training course is last for a week' (should be 'lasts') and 'It would be grateful' (should be 'It would be great'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision in collocation and grammatical forms of words. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic expressions or precise adjectives would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'you asking my suggestions' (should be 'you are asking for my suggestions') and 'swimming would be one of the best water sport' (should be 'sports'). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. Despite these errors, your writing is easy to follow. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy.
