Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Jack,

How're you doing? I'm writing to answer your concern that which new sport you can learn?

Although there are several sports which can be learned with practice and dedication, I personally think that football would be quite suitable for you. Since you already play soccer, some rules of playing football are similar to soccer; therefore, you can easily learn them.

If I talk about this sports' learning procedure, you can take training from my coach Mr. Smith. He is extremely kind-hearted and patience trainer who can teach you at your convenience timing. As I took training from him for one year, now I can play competitively.

Given these situation, I would be more than happy if we practice together in our local playground. While I completed my training, I need to practice more. Moreover, we both are free in the evening, we cannot only practice but also can spend quality time together.

I am really excited to play football with you. Let me know when you are free, we will discuss this matter more while sitting together.

Take care,

Jam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended football, explained how to learn it through Mr. Smith, and proposed learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the suggestion to train with a specific coach and the reasoning behind practicing together. The response is fully relevant to the task instructions, and the informal, friendly tone is maintained consistently, which is essential for this type of task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Since', 'Moreover', and 'While' to connect ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the letter. The flow of information is natural, and the progression of ideas from the recommendation to the learning method and finally the joint activity is smooth. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'kind-hearted', 'convenience timing', and 'play competitively' show a good attempt at using descriptive language. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'convenience timing' (should be 'convenient time') and 'Given these situation' (should be 'Given this situation'). While these do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and maintain the informal tone required for the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I'm writing to answer your concern that which new sport you can learn?' (the 'that which' construction is awkward) and 'patience trainer' (should be 'patient trainer'). Additionally, 'While I completed my training' is used incorrectly; 'Since I have completed my training' would be more accurate. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. You have a good grasp of basic structures, but more attention to subject-verb agreement and word forms would improve your accuracy.
