Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Garry
I hope you are doing well. I was on the seventh heaven when i received your letter that mentioned you want to learn new sport. I know you are addicted to sports since childhood but unfortunately due to circumstances you had always missed your chance. To begin with I would like to suggest you to learn cricket because nowadays Canada is planning to make a cricket team and they will select youth so it can be great chance for us.
However, if you are available on weekends you can come at my place because some well-known cricket players will come every weekend to give training to youth and they will also arrange matches for us.
Furthermore, I would like to suggest you that I am also planning to learn cricket so it will be great if you will join me because I will get more motivation to learn this amazing sport and we will have fun. Hope to see you soon.
Thanks and Regards
Anamika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You recommend cricket, explain how to learn it through weekend training sessions, and propose learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how to learn the sport is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the training or the benefits of the sport. Overall, the task is fulfilled clearly and the purpose of the email is evident throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The email is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to transition between paragraphs. While these are effective, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different points requested in the prompt. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentence structures feel slightly repetitive, which impacts the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'well-known cricket players' and 'addicted to sports' are used effectively. However, there are some awkward collocations and idiomatic errors, such as 'I was on the seventh heaven' (the correct idiom is 'I was in seventh heaven') and 'make a cricket team' (a more natural choice would be 'form' or 'establish' a team). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and a better grasp of common English idioms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I would like to suggest you to learn' (should be 'suggest that you learn' or 'suggest learning'), 'come at my place' (should be 'come to my place'), and missing articles (e.g., 'learn new sport' should be 'learn a new sport'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing the variety of complex structures and focusing on article usage would improve your score.
