Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mamta ,

I got your letter last week but I was busy with college stuff, that’s why, i couldn’t reply you earlier. I pleased to hear that you want to play a sport game during your free time.

I remember our school days, when you always enjoyed to play a badminton. I recommend you that you could start learning badminton. This could be a win-win situation if you could learn your favourite sport.

During my college placement, I know one of the coach who helped me you to learn the badminton. I heard these days, he’s retired and giving coaching at home for his passion. He is the best coach in the whole district, you will be lucky, if he accept you as a student.

I think, it would be great if you and me will start taking coaching together. We can fix our schedule and give some time to sports. We will enjoy and learn as well.

Looking forward to know your opinion.

Warm regards,

Jessica.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You recommend badminton, explain how to learn it through a specific coach, and propose learning together. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the prompt. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the 'how' of learning, such as mentioning the frequency of training or the benefits of the sport, which would further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'During my college placement' and 'I think, it would be great', which help the flow. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'that’s why, i couldn’t reply you earlier'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall cohesion of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'coaching', 'placement', and 'district'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'sport game' (redundant), 'enjoyed to play a badminton' (incorrect structure), and 'giving coaching' (should be 'providing coaching' or 'offering lessons'). Expanding your range of collocations and refining your word choices would help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I pleased to hear' (missing 'am'), 'I know one of the coach' (should be 'coaches'), 'if he accept you' (should be 'accepts'), and 'you and me will start' (should be 'you and I'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and ensuring that complex sentence structures are grammatically sound.
