Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Akash,

I hope you are doing well.

I am glad to know that you have decided to learn a new sport and asked for advice on it. I would recommend you to start learning new sport called pickle ball which is currently very famous among the people. I am advising you this sport because I already know you are good at playing lawn tennis and this sport is similar to it in some way. Moreover, I also know some people who are playing this sport on regular basis and they have gained lots of experience in it. They can help you in learning this sports as they are good friends to me.

I would also suggest that we can learns this new sport together if you are okay with it as recently I have also been gaining interest in this sports. As we live nearby, we can go together on daily basis.

Let me know what are your thoughts on this. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Warm Regards,

Jevin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly recommend pickleball, explain how to learn it through your friends, and suggest learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, maintaining a consistent informal register. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a clear rationale for the recommendation based on the friend's existing skills in lawn tennis. The response is fully functional and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Ideas progress smoothly from the recommendation to the learning method and finally the suggestion to join together. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As' to link ideas. While the paragraphing is functional, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the structure is appropriate for a letter/email format.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'gaining interest' and 'regular basis'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'advising you this sport' (should be 'recommending this sport to you') and 'gained lots of experience' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'learns this new sport' (subject-verb agreement) and 'on daily basis' (missing article 'a'). Additionally, 'new sport called pickle ball' lacks the necessary article 'a'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the email, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement in complex sentences.
