IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Jack,

How are you

Hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am advising you for the sport that you previously asked for. I searched a lot regarding this and found football is the best outdoor game for you. I will keep not only helping your physical ability but also freshening your mental health.

To learn this sport, there are too many coaching centers available in our town. You might contact them online or make an appointment with them. I was also planning to join the sport center academy. I would love it if we two could start together. It will be fun as well as learning new things for us, or we both are going to get the company of each other, so this will be convenient for us.

See you soon

Yours lovingly,

Avnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points: recommending a sport, explaining how to learn it, and suggesting you both join together. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of your ideas. While the recommendation of football is clear, the explanation of how to learn it is somewhat brief. To improve, you should expand on the details of the coaching centers or the process of joining. Because the response is under-length, it fails to fully develop the ideas required for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email follows a logical structure, moving from the greeting to the recommendation, the learning process, and finally the suggestion to join together. Paragraphing is present, though the transition between the recommendation and the learning process could be smoother. You use some cohesive devices like 'not only... but also' and 'as well as', but the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'I am advising you for the sport'. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but the cohesion is somewhat mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'coaching centers' and 'physical ability'. However, there are some unnatural collocations and word choices, such as 'freshening your mental health' (which should be 'improving' or 'benefiting') and 'get the company of each other'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and a wider range of vocabulary to express your thoughts with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'not only... but also'. However, there are several grammatical errors, including 'I will keep not only helping' (which is awkward) and 'or we both are going to get the company of each other'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the missing question mark after 'How are you'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit your score.
