Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear David,

Hope you are in radiant health and in the best of spirits. Yesterday, I got your letter in which you asked for my suggestion on learning a new sport.

As far as I know you, I believe that Football would be best for you, as you wanted to learn it when we were in school, but at that time our school did not support it. Later on in college, you opted for the science stream, and you had no extra time for this activity. This time is a golden opportunity for you to learn it and live your dream, as now you are almost free on weekends.

I can recommend you a club which I joined last year, I'm sure you will also enjoy a lot after joining it. Every month they play at least two matches at the state level, which would be great exposure for you once you learn it.

In fact, you can register in the evening batch here because I'm in that batch it would be easy for you to travel there as I can pick you up and drop at your home.

Kind regards,

Lucy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended football, explained how to learn it by joining a specific club, and proposed learning it together. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are developed logically. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the learning process, such as mentioning the frequency of training sessions or the type of coaching provided, which would further extend your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct point, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'As far as I know' and 'In fact' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to avoid a slightly repetitive structure. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the email.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'radiant health', 'golden opportunity', and 'great exposure'. These choices are natural and fit the context well. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that are common in informal English, such as 'brush up on' or 'give it a go', to make your writing sound even more natural and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are accurate, though there are minor slips, such as 'I can recommend you a club' (should be 'recommend a club to you') and 'I'm in that batch it would be easy' (which is a run-on sentence). Despite these minor errors, your control over grammar is generally strong, and the meaning is always clear. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help elevate your score.
