Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Araj

I hope you are well. I have received your email that you are asking my advice that how you can learn a new sports activity. I am writing this email to give you the information about the badminton which is my favourite.

To begin with, there are lots of activities that can keep you fit mentally and physically. However, according to me you should learn badminton. Likewise you have gained lot of weight after your baby it will not only help you to shape your body but also reduce your overweight. I also play badminton with my father in free time.

In addition to this, there are numerous ways to learn this. firstly I was not familiar with this game but my father who is a retired from Army taught me how to play that game. In my opinion you can hire a personal tutor to teach you this sport. It is not a big task. I am sure that in few weeks you would be able to play.

Furthermore, I am also not a perfect but you should practice everyday. This would be beneficial for your overall wellbeing.

Thanks

Navi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: recommending a sport, explaining how to learn it, and suggesting you learn it together. However, the third point—suggesting you both learn it together—is missing from your response. You mentioned playing with your father and suggested the friend hire a tutor, but you failed to propose that you and your friend participate in the activity together. To improve, ensure you explicitly cover every instruction provided in the prompt. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend, and the ideas are relevant, though the development of the suggestion to learn together is absent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'In addition to this', and 'Furthermore'. However, some transitions are used awkwardly, such as 'Likewise' at the start of the second paragraph, which does not logically connect to the previous sentence. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'that game' or 'this', which could be more specific. The flow is generally logical, but the mechanical use of some linking words prevents a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas, such as 'mentally and physically', 'wellbeing', and 'personal tutor'. However, there are several instances of unnatural word choice and minor errors, such as 'reduce your overweight' (should be 'lose weight') and 'I am also not a perfect' (should be 'I am not an expert'). These errors do not impede communication, but they show a limited control over collocations and idiomatic phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise terms would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I have received your email that you are asking my advice that how you can learn' (clunky structure), 'my father who is a retired from Army' (unnecessary article), and 'in few weeks' (missing article). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
