Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sarveshi,

I hope you and your family are in the Pink of health. I received you letter last week and I am writing to reply back regarding the suggestion you requested for leaning a new sport. I will be really glad suggesting you the sport that you can inculcate.

Since childhood we both are highly involved in some or the sports whether it be school, college or our own society. We both have been very active. I was just thinking about you the other day and what a coincident, just received your letter the same day. Last week i was going through an advertisement about the badminton classes which are going to held in the Gymkhana club, which is about 10 minutes drive from our town, I thought we both could add a new sport in our basket and learn it.

Badminton is a very interesting sport which is played with a shuttle and racket. In my own opinion it's made for the women and girls. Saniya Mirza an Indian sports woman who is indeed a top badminton player. She has been my inspiration to learn this game. You can definitely learn this sport as it makes you physically fit, it is mentally stimulating where strategy making is involved and keep your mind sharp. It improves our co-ordination of hand-eye.

I would highly recommend and advice you that both of us should learn this sport. learning badminton is an achievement own its own and it does not take much space. You can also do research on this game and do let me know as the registration of the classes to enroll the students have already begun. The early bird is going to get a 25% discount. Anyways my parents are calling me for dinner. Need to rush. Will wait for your reply. Give my regards to Aunt and uncle.

Yours faithfully,

Chandini

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You recommended badminton, explained how to learn it through the Gymkhana club, and invited your friend to join you. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. However, there are some factual inaccuracies, such as identifying Sania Mirza as a badminton player (she is a tennis player), which slightly impacts the clarity of your supporting ideas. To reach a higher band, ensure your supporting details are accurate and fully developed to maintain the reader's engagement throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices like 'Since childhood' and 'In my own opinion' to link ideas. However, the transition between paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the jump from discussing the club to the description of badminton feels slightly abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-connected theme will help improve the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'mentally stimulating' and 'inculcate'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'reply back' (redundant), 'in the Pink of health' (slightly misused in this context), and 'add a new sport in our basket' (unnatural). While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Focusing on learning common collocations will help you express your ideas more naturally and accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('classes which are going to held' should be 'are going to be held') and punctuation errors (e.g., 'Saniya Mirza an Indian sports woman who is...'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'learning badminton is an achievement own its own'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic verb forms and preposition usage.
