IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sabria,

I hope you are doing well. I know you are really interested in physical activities and really into sports. You asked for my suggestion for sport that would be new for you. I think you haven't tried pickleball, which is famous in Canada.

I also think about joining a class to learn pickleball, but I don't have time to engage in any sports activities. I really think that giving time to extracurricular activities can to relax our minds and keep ourselves physically and mentally fit. I saw a pickleball club near my workplace with 5 minutes walk.

So, I think we can join it together, and after work we can have time to play. This is because I am really into my work, which makes me stressful from long time. I hope you like my suggestion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points: recommending a sport (pickleball), explaining how to learn it (joining a class/club), and suggesting you learn it together. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of your ideas. For example, the explanation of how to learn the sport is quite brief. To improve, you should expand on the details of the club or the learning process to ensure you meet the length requirement and provide a more fully developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is generally easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use basic cohesive devices like 'I also think' and 'So', which help connect your sentences. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is presented as one block of text. To achieve a higher band, you should use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, the main body points, and the closing. This would make the structure more professional and easier to navigate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for a general task, but it is somewhat repetitive and lacks variety. Phrases like 'really into' and 'I think' are used multiple times, which limits the range of your expression. While you successfully use terms like 'extracurricular activities' and 'physically and mentally fit', you should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and less common vocabulary to demonstrate a wider range. For instance, instead of 'makes me stressful', you could use 'causes me a great deal of stress'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'can to relax' is incorrect, and 'makes me stressful from long time' is awkward and grammatically inaccurate. Additionally, 'suggestion for sport' should be 'suggestion for a sport'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
