Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Rahul,
I’m really happy to hear that you want to learn a new sport. I would strongly recommend **badminton**, as I think it would be perfect for you. It is enjoyable, easy to start, and it is also a great way to stay fit. Moreover, you do not need to be extremely athletic to begin playing it.
You could learn badminton by joining a local sports club or taking lessons from a professional coach. A coach can teach you the basic techniques, such as serving, holding the racket correctly, and moving around the court. You could also watch online tutorials and practise regularly with a partner. If you practise two or three times a week, I’m sure you will improve quickly.
Why don’t we learn badminton together? We could join the same club and attend lessons at the weekend. After each lesson, we could practise together and motivate each other. It would be much more enjoyable than learning alone, and we could also spend some quality time together.
Let me know what you think. I’m looking forward to playing badminton with you!
Best wishes,
Aesha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You successfully recommend badminton, provide clear and logical suggestions for how to learn it (joining a club, hiring a coach, using online tutorials), and propose learning it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, showing a good understanding of the task requirements. There are no omissions, and the response flows naturally from one point to the next.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a friendly closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'such as', 'If you', and 'After each lesson', which help to connect sentences and ideas naturally. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, making the letter coherent throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context of sports and learning. Phrases like 'extremely athletic', 'basic techniques', and 'motivate each other' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and natural, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your message precisely without any errors in word choice or collocation. The language is natural and fits the informal yet informative tone of the email perfectly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The grammar is highly accurate throughout the response. You use a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences ('If you practise... I’m sure you will...') and relative clauses ('...that you want to learn...'). Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no noticeable grammatical errors. The control over verb tenses and sentence construction is consistent, and the writing is error-free, which indicates a high level of proficiency.
