IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Your English-speaking friend who lives in your town has asked for your advice about learning a new sport. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Kandarp,

I hope you are doing well. I'm writing this email to catch up about the new sport that you want to learn.

The sport that i'd suggest you is Cricket. They say Cricket is a religion in india and 9 out of 10 people living in india are die hard fan of cricket. Cricket has 3 formats one day, test match and T20. Moreover it's a very active sport so, it's the best fit for fitness freak like you.

Cricket involves bowling, batting and fielding. In india every kid starts by learning batting. Hence, we will keep this ritual intact and i will first teach you how to bat.

In fact, the best we can do is we can learn this together, as in india i was so busy with studies, that i never got enough time to learn cricket to the full extent.

i'm waiting for you to send me the date to start.

Best wishes,

Dhyan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: recommending a sport (Cricket), explaining how to learn it, and suggesting you learn it together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the 'how to learn' section is somewhat brief. To improve, you could provide more specific details on the learning process, such as mentioning local clubs, coaching sessions, or practice drills, which would help to fully develop your ideas and reach a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'In fact' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent and try to use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly, rather than relying on simple conjunctions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'fitness freak', 'ritual', and 'formats'. However, there are some issues with capitalization (e.g., 'india' should be 'India') and minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'die hard fan' which should be 'die-hard fans'. The vocabulary is generally functional and appropriate for an informal email, but to reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise and varied collocations and ensure consistent attention to proper nouns and standard spelling conventions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'The sport that i'd suggest you is Cricket' (should be 'suggest to you'), '9 out of 10 people... are die hard fan' (should be 'fans'), and inconsistent capitalization of the pronoun 'i'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
