Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope you and your family are doing well. I am writing this email in regard to advice you about the new sport on which you wanted my suggestion.
I believe that you can go for swimming since you haven't taken aa course for the same since you were in primary school. I know that you skipped taking those classes in consideration with your hydrophobia. But I rally want you to learn swimming as it is considered one of the life saving skills. Swimming can not only save your life but also can save life of your beloved ones.
In order to get in touch with an institution or an instructor you can visit a website called 'My Learning' on google platform. You can easily contact and know about the institutions as it is very easy to fetch a number from the website.
If at all, you are feeling scared and alone I don't mind joining you for the training classes. I was also thinking about learning something new for the summer vacation activities.
Let me know what do you think about this idea. Hoping to hear from you soon.
Best regards,
Sara

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly recommend swimming, provide a practical method for finding an instructor via a website, and offer to join your friend in the activity. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, maintaining a friendly and supportive persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening sentence is more natural; for example, 'I am writing to give you some advice' is more idiomatic than 'I am writing this email in regard to advice you'. Overall, the task is fully covered.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The email is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In order to', 'If at all', and 'not only... but also' to connect your thoughts. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in linking words would enhance the flow. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'life saving skills' and 'beloved ones' are used effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in consideration with your hydrophobia' (should be 'in light of' or 'due to') and 'fetch a number' (which is slightly informal/unnatural in this context). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, there are occasional inaccuracies. Expanding your range of collocations and refining your use of prepositions will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this email in regard to advice you' (should be 'to advise you') and 'save life of your beloved ones' (missing an article: 'the lives of'). Additionally, 'aa' is a typographical error. Despite these slips, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and verb patterns. The majority of your sentences are clear and functional, which is consistent with a solid band 6.0 performance.
