Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
Hope you're doing well! I'm really glad to know that you asked for my suggestion about learning a new sport. As far as I know that you've been working from home in Information Technology and you have to sit in front of laptop for the whole day, so you should participate in learning and playing football because this sport involves a lot of physical activities.
You should know the general rules of the game which can be learned by searching them on the internet, watching some YouTube videos and football clubs matches on Television.
As we don't meet frequently because of our busy schedules, it is better to join the local football club together. I heard about the club from a friend that this is for beginners and the coach of the club is really friendly which would be extremely helpful to learn practical aspects of the game.
Let me know if you're interested.
Best Regards,
Ravneet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly recommend football, explain how to learn it through online resources and television, and propose joining a club together. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a coherent plan for your friend. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the benefits of the sport or the specific nature of the club to add more depth to your suggestions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The email is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As far as I know', 'As we don't meet frequently', and 'it is better to'. While the flow is generally good, the transition between the first and second paragraph could be smoother. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure is appropriate for a semi-formal or informal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'physical activities', 'busy schedules', and 'practical aspects'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'searching them on the internet' (which should be 'searching for them') and 'football clubs matches' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but incorporating more precise collocations or less common lexical items would help elevate the response to a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As far as I know that you've been working...'. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'As far as I know that you've been working' (the 'that' is redundant here) and 'sit in front of laptop' (missing an article: 'a laptop'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring that complex sentence structures are grammatically precise.
