Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

Hope you're doing well. I'm glad to know that you have asked for my advice to learn new sport which is required for a person who is spending most of the time sitting in front of the screen for the job. From my point of view, it is a good idea to get involve in some kind of physical activity .

I would like to encourage you to take part in football club.

To learn the basics, you can start by watching videos on You tube. It can be beneficial in learning the rules and regulation about this particular sport. Additionally, you will get the information about the things needed to start it.

Two months ago, I have joined the local football club in the town and have made an significant progress in football. As we don't meet frequently, I would like you to join the same club so, we can learn it together and can see each other.

Let me know if it matches your schedule.

Best regards,

Arsh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly recommend football, explain how to learn it via online resources, and suggest learning together. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend. To improve, ensure that your ideas are more fully developed. For instance, while you mention watching videos, you could briefly explain why this is a good starting point for a beginner. The structure is logical, and the purpose of the email is clear from the beginning, meeting the requirements for a Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'From my point of view' to link sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the connection between your personal experience and the invitation to join could be more naturally integrated. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'physical activity', 'beneficial', and 'matches your schedule'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'get involve' (should be 'get involved') and 'an significant progress' (should be 'significant progress'). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, these small inaccuracies prevent a higher score. Focusing on correct verb forms and article usage with nouns will help improve your lexical precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have joined' (should be 'I joined' as a specific time 'two months ago' is mentioned) and 'the rules and regulation' (should be plural 'regulations'). Additionally, there is a missing article in 'learn new sport' (should be 'a new sport'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Increasing your control over tense consistency and article usage will lead to higher accuracy.
